Grr Bar ShUd

Grr酒吧Shud

I'd just like to point out that if you translate the Chinese version back into English it's pretty funny and makes no sense but here is the original:

Grr Bar ShUd
To scrawl without a fifth glyph? Simplicity
In fact, I’ll do it two-fold to show my complicity
To scroll through my stanzas will show a grit
For I must admit my wording is a bit misfit

But I won’t worry you with nitty-gritty
Just sit back and savor as I sound witty
And sink in your chair to sounds of my syntax
With a pad and crayon to nail down this class

Sink low, think hard
What I am showing you now you should not discard
For I control my flow as if it was stuck in quicksand
Fast, slow, with command in my hand

As you scrawl a work without a fifth glyph
Your words do not wish to abruptly turn stiff
Simply mull for a backup
And you’ll find you won’t slip up

Writing a poem without the letter "e" proved pretty challenging for me. Often, when I think of what I want to write, I have choice wording. However, the annoying condition of not being able to write "e" didn't let me implement my preferred wording. Therefore, I had a hard time getting my poem to flow like I wanted; I often needed to find weird alternate wording to convey my idea, but that wording didn't flow nicely. In the end, it took a lot of time, but I managed to find good alternative wording for my writing, that allowed it to flow well, and follow the requirement of not being able to write the letter "e". Looking back, the challenge proved to be hard, but enjoyable too.

  1. I thought it was clever to use a different language without an alphabetic script to write your poem, and the English version is pretty humorous. I like the phrase "scrawl without a fifth glyph" and how fluid the poem sounds without the letter E. Even though I'm not entirely fluent, I can say that this will definitely pass as native Chinese anywhere you go, especially the intelligent title, "Grr酒吧Shud". Great work!

  2. This is super cool, Lawrence. I also think it's super clever to use a different script, but I wonder what the most common phonemes/characters are in Chinese? It might be productive to try to write a poem without those ones. This is not meant as a diss by the way, it's really good.

  3. Larry, this was very fun. I thought that you wrote the poem in English, then translated it into Chinese, which is technically still within the parameters of the prompt as Chinese doesn't use "e" either. But you didn't! (Not that it's surprising, but rather you did the more than what was called for.) I was pleasantly surprised with both your poem and your methods of presentation. Great job!

  4. This is a very creative way to get around using the letter e! Using the characters of a language that doesn't use a phonetic alphabet was very clever. I also like how the poem in English still doesn't include the letter 'e'.

  5. This was a very clever way of getting around using the letter e! I also enjoyed reading the english translation that also didn't use the letter e. Great job!

  6. This is a really cool poem with very clever rhymes. I'm impressed that you actually wrote a whole poem in English instead of just finding the loophole and translating some 'e'-rampant stanzas into Chinese. Nice!

  7. Creative! Why did you choose Mandarin? But the content itself is very interesting and clever, the poem actually makes sense and is very funny. The translation is a good level of extra, it made your whole post more intriguing!

  8. I love "To scrawl without a fifth glyph? Simplicity" as an opening line. Nice job on both the poem and the commentary. (The commentary zoundz pretty natural, given your limitationz ;)
